School Bike Education Program Rolls On

BikeWalkBG has received a $8,700 grant award from the Paula Nye Memorial Grant Fund to continue the BikeWalkBG School Bike Education Program.  BikeWalkBG, in partnership with Warren County Parks & Rec, the Barren River District Health Department, and community volunteers, is offering free Bicycle Education classes to local city and county 4th graders again in the 2025-26 school year.  The program was launched in the spring semester of 2024.  With funding from the Paula Nye Memorial Bicyclist and Pedestrian Education Grant funding, BikeWalkBG and partners are able to provide and bring to schools all of the bicycles, helmets, and equipment needed to provide a 45-minute P.E. session.  The program stresses bicycle safety & handling and healthy lifestyles, along with the joy of biking.  This fall classes were conducted at eight area schools involving 28 classes and 625 students in an eight-week period.

Thanks to Briarwood Elementary, Bristow Elementary, Jennings Creek Elementary, Natcher Elementary, Richardsville Elementary, Rockfield Elementary, T.C. Cherry Elementary, and W.R. McNeill Elementary who participated this fall. We are scheduling sessions now for spring 2026.  Oakland Elementary and Plano Elementary have already secured dates for this spring.   If you are a parent or educator interested in the program, or if you want to volunteer with Bike Ed or any other programming that BikeWalkBG sponsors, please reach out to Carroll Duckworth, MPO Coordinator at 270-842-1953.

What is BPAC (Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee)?

The MPO BPAC is a subcommittee of the MPO Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). The BPAC provides a forum of communication and collaboration for the bicycle and pedestrian community and public officials alike. The focus areas of the BPAC are to plan, advise, advocate, and educate. The BPAC makes recommendations to the TAC, which then proceeds to the MPO Policy Committee for final decision. With all transportation modes (highway, transit, bike-ped) under the planning efforts of the MPO, the MPO better represents a multimodal system where all forms of transportation are recognized and planned within a single entity. BPAC meetings are open to the public.  Meeting details such as date, time, location, agenda, and minutes can be found HERE.  Sign up HERE to be added to the distribution list to stay up-to-date on BikeWalkBG and Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee meetings, events, activities, programs, and ways to get involved.

Over 30 bicyclists gathered at Mary Jane’s Chocolates to start the ride.  Mary Jane’s Chocolates provided sweets and water to kick the ride off.  The ride took to Beach Bend Park where they got to tour the park and ride on the drag strip.   Beech Bend Park provided a water break for riders. for the St. Paddy’s Day Ride on Saturday, March 14.  Watch for weekly rides starting in April.   Come join the fun!
